Vision of NHoA

The general objective of NHoA is the co-design of a socially intelligent assistive robot as the key to the robustness, adaptability, patient acceptance and engagement.

The NHoA robot shall be an embodied assistive actor that sense the social and emotional environment and proactively intervene to build an affective relationship with the user.

Loneliness is a direct consequence of the demographic shift and negatively affects the well-being and mental health of the elderly, leading to an increasing incidence of depression and social exclusion. Inspired by the scientific experience of caregivers, we aim to develop robots that mitigate loneliness by encouraging the contact within a related network, emulating the group therapies.

Objectives

The project will conceptualize and demonstrate a connected Social Robot that provides some of the following associated services to support the elder at home in synergy with the caregivers:

Prevention of loneliness and isolation

Remote health monitoring and cognitive and physical stimulation to maintain and improve healthy lifestyle habits

Robot assistance to improve well-being and domestic comfort

A social intelligence

Developing a social intelligence robot for elder care requires a deep degree of mutual human-robot understanding which relies on the capacity to both express and perceive instructions, intentions, emotions, and hidden patterns.

These communications go beyond visual and verbal. Physical expressivity and motion legibility are key aspects. Likewise, in the case of moving robots co-habiting with old persons at home, graceful motion around the home in empathy and complicity with the elder requires a great deal of scene understanding and affective planning.

Health monitoring, behaviour detection and behaviour stimulation are also key aspects to generate and affective proactive engagement
